KANSAS CITY, MO — October 23rd, 2025 — When the lights dim and the percussion starts, the audience doesn’t just cheer — they answer. In a Making Movies Band concert, music isn’t a performance; it’s a conversation. A call to unity. A declaration that rhythm is home.
For a growing community of devoted followers known as the Making Movies Tribe, that message has become more than a lyric — it’s a way of life.
“We don’t have fans,” says frontman Enrique Chi. “We have family. The people who come to our shows, they’re part of this movement with us — they carry it forward.”
The Band That Defies Borders
Formed in Kansas City in 2009 by Panamanian brothers Enrique and Diego Chi, alongside Juan Carlos Chaurand and Duncan Burnett, Making Movies Band has built an international following by defying boundaries — musical, linguistic, and cultural.
Their genre-bending mix of rock, cumbia, son cubano, psychedelia, and soul has earned praise from Billboard, NPR, and Rolling Stone Latinoamérica. But what sets them apart isn’t just the sound — it’s the spirit.
Each song feels like a gathering around a fire, where old stories are retold with electric guitars and ancestral drums.
A Legacy Written in Rhythm
Making Movies Band’s discography reads like a roadmap of modern Latin identity:
- A La Deriva (2013) — a poetic look at the immigrant journey.
- I Am Another You (2017) — exploring empathy and shared humanity through bilingual storytelling.
- ameri’kana (2019) — featuring collaborations with Rubén Blades, Los Lobos, and Flor de Toloache; the single “No Te Calles” earned a Latin Grammy nomination.
- Xopa (2022) — a lush, experimental album expanding their cultural universe even further.
Every release pushes beyond entertainment toward something deeper: identity, resistance, and belonging.
“We use our instruments to tell stories people don’t always hear in mainstream music,” says Enrique Chi. “But they’re our stories — all of ours.”
The Making Movies Tribe: Fans Who Feel Like Family
Over the years, Making Movies has cultivated a fiercely loyal fanbase that sees itself reflected in the band’s mission. These aren’t casual listeners — they’re believers.
Fans travel state to state for shows, volunteer for Art As Mentorship events, and proudly tag their photos with #MakingMoviesTribe — a hashtag that’s become a digital family tree.
At concerts, it’s not unusual to see multiple generations dancing side by side: parents teaching kids the rhythms, friends embracing strangers. The line between stage and crowd disappears.
“You can feel it,” says longtime fan María Alvarez of Austin, Texas. “It’s like you’re part of something ancient and alive. You don’t just go to a show — you join it.”
Art As Mentorship: Turning Passion Into Purpose
That sense of community doesn’t stop when the music ends. Through their nonprofit Art As Mentorship, the band gives young creators the tools to tell their own stories.
The program offers songwriting workshops, production training, and performance opportunities — ensuring that the next generation of voices can rise with confidence and pride.
It’s this merging of artistry and activism that has transformed Making Movies Band from a touring act into a cultural institution.
The 2025 Tour: An Invitation, Not a Show
This year’s Making Movies 2025 Tour is being billed not just as a series of concerts, but as a reunion — a gathering of the Tribe.
Each night will feature reimagined versions of fan favorites, exclusive new material, and collaborations with emerging artists from the Art As Mentorship program.
Tickets are available now at makingmovies.world/tour, with several early-bird packages already selling out.
